Stark estimates on eradication of poverty gain media interest

UNU-WIDER working paper on the progress towards eradication of poverty has been highlighted in several media.

The WIDER Working Paper ‘Will economic growth be sufficient to end global poverty? New projections of the UN Sustainable Development Goals‘ by Arief Anshory Yusuf, Zuzy Anna, Ahmad Komarulzaman, and Andy Sumner, estimates that 600 million people will remain in extreme poverty by 2030 despite the efforts towards sustainable development goals.

These results were picked up internationally in the media, with features in the The Economic Times, as well as on Australian media platform Mirage News.

In Finnish media, the results of the paper were shared on Maailma.net, a Finnish online publication focused on sustainable development, human rights, development cooperation and civil society:

‘The world will not achieve the goal of eliminating extreme poverty by 2030 according to a new forecast by the Helsinki-based UNU-WIDER and its partners. […] The background is, for example, climate change, conflicts, and the COVID-19 pandemic.’

Another Finnish publication focusing on development issues, Kehityslehti, run by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, published a piece on the study:

‘Professor Arief Yusuf, who was part of the research group, said in UNU-WIDER's press release that the international community should also consider debt relief and alternative sources of financing for the economies of developing countries so that they can implement effective poverty reduction programmes.’

The results of the research were also analysed in a blog by Arief Anshory Yusuf, Zuzy Anna, Ahmad Komarulzaman, and Andy Sumner, published in From Poverty to Power. The blog was later republished in WIDERAngle
