SOUTHMOD presented at the European Conference for African Studies 2023

University of Cologne hosts the European Conference for African Studies on 31 May - 3 June 2023. The topic of this year's conference is 'African Futures'. Raphael Macha, a collaborator of UNU-WIDER's SOUTHMOD project in Tanzania presents a paper on disability cash transfers at the conference on 3 June.

The topic of the presentation is Simulated impact of disability cash transfers on poverty and income inequality in Tanzania and its implication on government expenditure. The presentation is based on simulations done using TAZMOD model, which is a tailored tax-benefit microsimulation model for Tanzania. The paper was initiated during the TAZMOD training retreat in 2022.

The conference is organised by AEGIS, a research network of European studies centres which aims to create synergies between experts and institutions. With primary emphasis on Social Sciences and Humanities, AEGIS' main goal is to improve understanding about contemporary African societies.

This year's conference brings together over 2000 delegates from 80 countries, delivering 1470 papers across 245 panels/roundtables. The aim of the conference is to explore the continent’s critical engagements with the past, present, and future of Africa’s global entanglements.

The presentation is part of UNU-WIDER's SOUTHMOD – simulating tax and benefit policies for development project. SOUTHMOD is part of UNU-WIDER's research and capacity development programme on domestic revenue mobilization (DRM), funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation (Norad).
