Public services at grassroots level in Africa [in Finnish]

Ruohonjuuritason julkiset palvelut Afrikassa
On 26 May 2018 UNU-WIDER organizes a panel at the World Village festival in Helsinki to discuss the current situation and the future of public services in Africa.

With the aim to improve the quality of education and health care in Africa, the World Bank has been leading by developing the Service Delivery Indicators (SDI). The SDIs provide a set of metrics for benchmarking service delivery performance in education and health in Africa. The overall objective of the indicators is to gauge the quality of service delivery in primary education and basic health services. The indicators enable governments and service providers to identify gaps and to track progress within and across countries over time.

Progress has been made, but still children are learning too little and wrong medical diagnoses are made in health centres. How could service provision be improved in Africa? What is the role of development aid in improving the quality of public services?

The UNU-WIDER panel at the World Village festival includes UNU-WIDER Research Fellow Jukka Pirttilä, former World Bank Director Ritva Reinikka and Ossi Heinänen, Secretary General of Plan International Finland. The panel is moderated by MTV3's foreign correspondent Rita Strömmer.
