Parallel session
Southern Africa during the pandemic

The social and economic effects of COVID-19 in developing countries have been material. But these impacts have varied substantially across sectors and some activities have even seen gains. Furthermore, government responses have varied, in some cases mitigating the worst impacts through emergency social safety nets.

This session presents studies on the effects of COVID-19 from the Southern African region, focusing particularly on Mozambique and South Africa. We explore estimates of COVID-19 on growth, poverty, labour markets and trade.
