SOUTHMOD presented at the MEXMOD launch event

Mexico will be launching the tax-benefit microsimulation model MEXMOD on 11 February 2021. The launch event will be organized online by Centro de Investigación en Alimentación y Desarrollo (CIAD) and the University of Essex.

The event will bring together participants from both academia and government to follow various presentations and discuss around the topic. UNU-WIDER Research Fellow Pia Rattenhuber will participate in the event to share knowledge on the SOUTHMOD models and their benefits. She will be presenting the first results of the SOUTHMOD COVID-19 study on African countries and Viet Nam.

Holguer Xavier Jara Tamayo, Research Fellow at University of Essex and a member of the ECUAMOD national team, will present his work assessing the financial cost informal workers would incur if they entered formal employment, given the characteristics of the tax-benefit system in five Latin American countries: Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. The analysis is based on ECUAMOD and other tax-benefit microsimulation models implemented in EUROMOD.

SOUTHMOD project

The presentation is part of the UNU-WIDER project SOUTHMOD - simulating tax and benefit policies for development. Tax-benefit microsimulation models provide knowledge for better policy-making and inclusive development. With the models the effects of different policy scenarios on poverty, inequality, and government revenues can be analysed and compared.
