Myanmar Enterprise Monitoring System (MEMS) - Stakeholder consultation on the first draft report

A stakeholder consultation with national and international policy makers for the first draft of the Myanmar Enterprise Monitoring System (MEMS) report takes place at Central Statistical Organization (CSO) Office, Naypyidaw, Myanmar on 14 March 2018.

As part of the MEMS objective to promote public discussion on policy options by engaging relevant stakeholders, a consultation round for the first MEMS report is organized. The stakeholder consultation includes  representatives from Central Statistical Organization (CSO) of the Ministry of Planning and Finance of Myanmar, UNU-WIDER, University of Copenhagen, and the Embassy of Denmark among others, with the report to be finalized in May 2018.

The cornerstone of the 'Towards inclusive development in Myanmar' project is the establishment of a rigorous MEMS. The MEMS focuses on the industrial small and medium enterprise (SME) sector, with an overall aim to strengthen evidence-based policy-making and analysis to help underpin Myanmar’s move through a challenging structural transformation and development process. Moreover, the MEMS contributes to the on-going improvement of the quality of economic policy discussions in Myanmar, thus supporting the government in its efforts of assessing and implementing relevant industrial policies for the future.

MEMS is the first nationally representative survey focusing exclusively on manufacturing enterprises in Myanmar and their employees. To accurately illustrate the status of the private manufacturing sector, the data was collected in 35 townships in all 14 regions and states of the country, as well as the Nay Pyi Taw Union Council in June and July 2017. The sample comprises almost 2,500 enterprises and more than 6,700 employees, which are statistically representative of more than 71,000 manufacturing firms in Myanmar.
