Multidimensional Child Poverty Assessment Methodology


The ‘Multidimensional Child Poverty Assessment Methodology’ seminar was held in Maputo on 8 July 2015. It was part of the UNU-WIDER Research Programme theme of Transformation organized in partnership with the Ministry of Economics and Finance of Mozambique, the University Eduardo Mondlane, the University of Copenhagen, and UNICEF.

UNICEF and the UNU-WIDER team in Mozambique are building on years of in-country collaboration. Incorporating the Children’s Fund into the ‘Analysing Poverty’ workshop programme ensured that the assembled group of post-graduates, government officials and representatives of international organizations got the opportunity to learn from, and enhance their links with, UNICEF. Illustrating to the audience the parameters of existing analysis, and tying the information to the skills gained in the workshop, the seminar also introduced new methods of analysis, including the MODA (Multiple Overlapping Deprivation Analysis) concept, underlining a ‘whole child’ approach and enhances a focus on equity.

Uniting multiple UN perspectives, as well as those of local actors and agencies on a national scale, our efforts continue to build capacity within the country and strengthen the domestic potential for poverty analysis. The workshop, and collaboration between the partners that put it together, will continue as part of the work of the UNU-WIDER project ​Inclusive growth in Mozambique - scaling-up research and capacity.
